Stone Soup for Five: {Sermon Notes & Doodles} Mark 6:7-13

{Sermon Notes & Doodles} Mark 6:7-13

After years of living with myself, I know that when January rolls around and it's time to start all the shiny new goals, the fun wears off in a week or two.  So for the last few years, I've starting "warming up" by naming December my practice month.  If I have a practice month for some goals, then I'm not hard on myself if I miss a few, because it's practice, not perfection.  So in December I'm practicing for some of the new things I want to change in the blog for next year.

Personally, I love it when bloggers share their day to day life, rather than coming down from on high to share their spiritual knowledge.  I figure if I love that, maybe you do too, and since I'm not on social media anymore, this will be a home to share some stuff that I would normally share on there. I'll have the email go out with the topic in brackets, so if you're not interested, you can skip that post. I'll also tag these posts (you can see the tag at the bottom of each post) so they will all be sorted and kept in one place for easier reference.

Earlier this week I posted my Bullet Journal set up that I want to share each month in 2021.  And another new series I want to start is weekly Sermon Notes & Doodles. This will keep me accountable to actually revisit the notes I take over the Sunday sermon, rather than stuff them in my Bible and have fall out on the floor during church in a loud and embarrassing pile.  Also, it helps me process the sermon, look up referenced verses, and add some thoughts (and maybe doodles!) to help me remember and apply it in life and prayer much better.

So around Wednesday each week, I'm hoping to put up my weekly sermon notes.  After I post them here, I'll file them in a binder under the book of the Bible and hopefully someday I'll end up with a commentary of sermons that I can refer back to.  Wouldn't that be cool?

So here's the practice month beginning of Sermon Notes & Doodles, brought to you by a cheap ball point pen and notebook paper.  This week it was over Mark 6:7-13.  The page on the left is the notes I took during the sermon.  The page on the right is the highlights I pulled out.  I don't try to transcribe the sermon, but rather make an outline and emphasize the points that stood out to me.

  1. I love this idea! I have so many sermon notes. I write them in journal books. But hardly ever go back over them. This is a better way to engulf the meanings and soak up what God has said to me through our pastor's sermon.

  2. I sort of do this also! I typically re-listen to the sermon on Monday (though I like your idea if doing it mid-week) and transfer my notes to my sermon journal, while filling in things I missed or didn't have time to write. Writing them a second time helps me remember. I'm not a doodler much, but I am an avid highlighter :) I sometimes also share high points that really stood out to me on our family text.

  6. I take notes in a skinny softcover unlined notebook/journal. I actually index it (actual index the various verses & topics, etc) so can go back later & find things if needed. But I like your idea of taking notes on 3-ring notebook paper to insert in a binder!

Also the accountability is fabulous. I like it so much I want to do something similar on my blog--and like you I'm moving away from all the social media diversions! :-)

  7. This is a great idea! I like to do creative notes but since now I am the host for our church zoom streaming its hard for me to pay attention to the zoom and take notes. SO I decided to record the sermons to go back and take notes.. but have to be honest, I haven't! BUT this post reminded me to do that. Thank you!
PS. cant wait to see your futures sermons notes and doodles.
