Stone Soup for Five: Meme vs. Truth: round 1

Meme vs. Truth: round 1

As Christian women living in the world, it is easy to start unconsciously believing the memes and catchy quotes we see everywhere.  Especially tricky are the ones that have just a little bit of the truth mixed with a bigger lie.  For your consideration, here are a few:

LIE

TRUTH
Know who you are in Christ.  Do what He has for you.  For Him.

Colossians 3:2-3:  Set your mind on things above...for your life is hidden with Christ in God.
2 Corinthians 3:18: ...be transformed into His image
Philippians 3:7  Count all things as loss for the sake of Christ

.

.

LIES

TRUTH
It's not about loving ourselves, but losing ourselves.
Matthew 10:39: He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake shall find it.

John 15:16:  I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit...
John 15:17:  ...love one another
1 Peter 2:17:  Honor all men; love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
1 John 3:16: We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

LIE

TRUTH
Okay, in all fairness this one actually holds a lot of truth in it.  It's just probably completely the opposite of what the quote intended.  Following your heart will be our destiny, unfortunately that destiny would be pretty awful.

Jeremiah 17:9:  The heart is deceitful above all things...
Mark 7:21:  ...from out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries...
Proverbs 28:26:  He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.
Proverbs 3:5:  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.

  3. I am so happy to see this series of blog posts coming! I have been struggling to verbalize this alarming trend in my FaceBook newsfeed. I am happy to see so many folks being able to communicate that life is tough and there are many ways to deal with adversity and hard times. But these memes! They sound good. They sound helpful even. But they don't speak to the truth of God's Word.

  4. This series has a lot of food for thought in it. I appreciate that you have taken the time to present it to us in this manner. Lately I find myself needing to ask, what would Christ want me to do in these circumstances? What words would He give me to say? There are so many out in the world showing their cold and heartless side thinking they are being truthful and that it is their right to express their thoughts--no matter what the consequences might be. It is a treacherous Memememe world. I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on this topic.

  5. Thank you for the wonderful post. Our culture has changed so much in the last 5-10 years that it’s frightening. It’s a blessing to have your blog and especially your studies as a voice calling us out of the desert of self-centered hopelessness. I will definitely share these with the ladies in my community. Thank you for the work you do and the truth that you bring to people. May you and your family be blessed as you’ve blessed all of us.

  6. Thank you so very much for sharing this post in this way!! Being a Christian and brought up in a Christian household, many times I am confused when it comes to these. Basically, I've decided that meme's have nothing to do with Christ and everything to do with the "me-me" culture. Thinking of it in that way helps me to remember better.
