Stone Soup for Five: Find your "Hang On" verse NOW

Find your "Hang On" verse NOW

A couple of weeks ago a guest speaker came to our church and talked about living by faith in hard times, and then some practical things to do NOW before those hard times hit.

One of the things that stood out to me was when he ended with the importance of needing a "hang on" verse already memorized for when those hard times hit.  Because we all know that we're not getting out of this life without hard times and rough waters.

So now, as I'm reading my Bible, I've been searching for those verses that I can start memorizing for those hard times.

Psalm 33:18-22:  Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His lovingkindness, to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.  Our soul waits for the Lord;  He is our help and our shield.  For our heart rejoices in Him, because we trust in His holy name.  Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in You.

I've made those verses my hang on verses for now.  My boys and I are working on memorizing them together.  Because some day something is going to happen, and we're going to need them.

I also want to encourage you to memorize them WITH family and OUT LOUD.  Because, someday when hard times hit, you are going to remember the sound of their voices saying this verse, or they might need to remember you saying it.  I would love nothing more than when a hard time hits, to know my boys are saying "Remember mom always quoting Psalm 33 as our hang on verse?"

As you are read your Bible, be on the look out for verses that will help you and others "hang on" when those rough times hit.  And begin memorizing it together.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Psalm 33:18-22
Psalm 23
Proverbs 3:5-6
Psalm 42:5
Ephesians 3:20-21

What about you? Do you have some verses already stored away for hard times?  If so, share in the comments!  I'm always in search of scripture to cling to!

  1. Thank you Kari, I really needed this TODAY. God bless.

  2. Deuteronomy 31:6 is one I cling too.

  3. Yes I do! I've commited several to memory for those time when I can't quiet my mind. In fact I just wrote an article about this very thing. Check out

    Blessings to you and yours!

  4. I need to make a list of the ones I cling too!! Thank you!

  5. Thank you! Thank you! Love this post. Having a verse to hang on to is perfect for when times get tough. I will start looking for them as I read scripture. Also, I really enjoy how you journal it is so expressive. Thanks for your wonderful blog.

  6. Proverbs 3:5-6 were my baptismal verses, so life-long hang on verses. Recently I've added Phil 4:6-7 in the NLT "don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus"

  7. For the last year or so I've been going through some trials and I've clung to Psalm 46:10..."Be still..." God has whispered it in my ear over and over and over again. And you know what...he was right. I've been waiting patiently (and not so patuently at times) and He has been taking care of things all along.

  8. My favorite is 2 Corinthians 12:9, also Joshua 1:8-9 and 2 Timothy 1:7
