Stone Soup for Five: When You're Punched in the Gut

When You're Punched in the Gut

You're doing fine.

In fact, you might even be doing great.

Things are rolling along,
you have goals,
you are managing your time,
you are reading the Word,
you didn't bite the kids' heads off this morning,
your house is relatively clean....

Things are pretty amazing, actually.

You are punched in the gut.

Entering your house.

Sometimes, honestly, life sucks.
Sin sucks.

This world is dark
and difficult to negotiate
and you can't control your kids
you can't change their hearts
you can't even change your own heart.

So what do you do now?

You just keep on rolling.

You just keep on praying.

You just keep on clinging to the Keeper of all Promises.

Clinging to the One who loves your kids more than You do.

And you remind yourself of who has which job.

And you get to work on YOUR job.

Lord, we're tired.  We're feeling beat down and hopeless.  Surrounded by so much sin, and with kids at an age where they have to start to negotiate it and make decisions that aren't always godly.

Help us to remember that we will never be able to change their hearts.  Help our prayer to be that you will take their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.  That is your job.  Help our unbelief.

Help us to be kind... when they are sinful and unkind.

Help us be able to teach... give us Your words and Your wisdom and prepare their hearts to receive it.

Help us be patient when wronged... and to see the wrong in the right light; it's not a wrong against us, but a wrong against a Holy God.

Help us correct gently... so Your Spirit can work in their heart by our gentle and loving words and so Your Spirit can work in our hearts too, by keeping us gentle and kind.

And help us to remember Your promises.

Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
-Ezekiel 36:29
