Stone Soup for Five: My week: what's working, and what's not.

My week: what's working, and what's not.

F A M I L Y

What's working:

  • Having the boys shop, cook, and clean up one meal a week.
What's Not:
  • Having hot dogs and chips for dinner once (or twice!) a week with no green anything in sight.
What to do:
  • This week I'm requiring some sort of vegetable with every meal.  They can open a can or make a salad or cook the frozen blend mix.  It's time to introduce a more well balanced meal, now that they aren't complaining about having to cook, and are kind of even enjoying it most of the time. Time to up their game.
  • I also made a list of some quick and easy to prep meals for them to choose from, so if they get stuck and say "I don't know.... hot dogs?" I can point them to better choices.

What's Working:
What's Not:
  • Nothing.  FLYlady is simple, straight forward and as long as I know what Zone I'm working on, it makes it easy to go to that room and do SOMETHING for 5-15 min.  This week I'm on Master Bedroom and Garage.

What's Working:
  • A non-diet experiment with Jami at An Oregon Cottage.  I don't know Jami, but have been following her for years and her meals are a lot like ours, but she's at a healthy weight... so I'm interested.  Especially when she posted an update about her weight journey.  So I'm trying out her way, which makes a lot of sense to me.
  • Working out with Fitness Blender is going great too.  All the boys do 3 sessions a week, which is my goal too.  LOVE the professional quality, the huge variations, and that it's FREE!
What's Not:
  • It's not working to stay at this weight.  It's not working to go on extreme or costly diets.  I don't want a miracle.  I don't want an entire new way of eating.  I want more exercise. Less food.  More water.  Right now cutting my meals in half is hard, but it's working.
What to do:
  • This week I'm going to continue to think SMALL and eat half of my regular portion and drink more water.  It's definitely working so far!  And I'm going to nail all three of my workouts of 30 min or more.

What's working:
  • Homeschool this year is going good.  Still adjusting to new curriculum for my youngest, but that's me, not him.  At the beginning of this school year my one goal for the year was to become a dedicated homeschooler and that means saying NO to a lot of good stuff, to be sure to have time for the best stuff.  Saying NO for me, is HARD, but it's only for a season.  Just gotta remember that.
What's not:
  • I've still got to figure in a time and day to do reviews to make sure all is completed.  Ideally I'd like to do it on Fridays, but that just isn't working.  Maybe I need to review each son's work on different days of the week and it wouldn't be so overwhelming?
What to do:
  • Write out a plan of what days and times I will review each son's work, correct, and file.  WRITE IT OUT, KARI.  Plan it on your calendar!

What's working:
  • I'm having success with doing the most important things first thing in the morning when the house is quiet and I can think without interruption.  But I'm dragging my feet here.  I don't know if it's burnout, laziness, exhaustion, or what...
What's not:
  • It's not working to not have new items for sale. It's not working to keep going Soooo SLOOOOOWWWWW on producing.
What to do:
  • Set goals. Write them down.  At the end of the week, I need to review if I hit them and why or why not.

What's working:
  • Crockpot meals are becoming increasingly important around here.  I'm digging out my Fix it and Forget it cookbook a lot more and searching for more recipes from friends and online.  Just found The CrockPotLadies and loving it.
  • It is working wonderfully to pre-prep my meals on the weekends and freeze or store in the fridge.
  • I've committed to making at least one extra freezer meal once a week, and as long as I have a plan for it, it is super easy to make two at the same time and freeze one to give away or keep for a crazy night.  While I've known this for years, I never seem to do it, so writing it on the menu and being intentional about it has been the game changer.
What's not:
  • It's not working eat cereal for every breakfast.  Too expensive. Not filling enough.  Not healthy.  I've been doing better prepping breakfasts, but I need to find more easy, freezer friendly, or crockpot meals.  My mornings are packed and I need quick options.
What to do:
  • My To Do list will include finding at least three new easy to prepare ahead of time breakfast options.
