Stone Soup for Five: Bible Journal --through any chapter

Bible Journal --through any chapter

This morning the boys and I used our Bible time to work on another style of page for our Bible journals.  (And by the way, this works for ALL AGES and is fun!)

We are reading through the book of John aloud together in the mornings and today is John 18.

We looked at how many breaks there were in this chapter (where the Bible writers break the chapter into sub-headings) and drew that number of boxes on our page titled "John 18".  This chapter happened to have 6 subheadings.

I draw rough boxes, then go over them again (like I did for these first two so far) and draw a darker, wavy kind of line around it, just for fun.

.
.
.
.

Then we read through a section (from the beginning to the first subheading) and drew a quick stick figure sketch of what happened in that section.  I also titled it with the subheading in the Bible.

.
.
.
.

Then we just continued doing the same for each subheading,
drawing the scene that stuck out to us.

.
.
.
.

We did each drawing quickly, without worrying about it being perfect.
The main point is to summarize and remember (and add a little fun to it).

.
.
.
.

and then, voila!  You have just summarized a chapter in your Bible, had fun doing it, and added another great page to your Bible Journal!

In fact, you could easily dedicate a journal JUST to summarizing your way through each chapter in the New Testament, or through the ENTIRE Bible.

  1. I don't know how you come up with this stuff, but your journal ideas rock. Also, you have beautiful handwriting. Also, I wish doodling came more naturally to me. I tend to do flowers... lots and lots of boring little flowers.

Thanks so much for sharing this fun idea!

    1. I came up with this idea out of pure desperation, Kira. The boys are reaching a point where just reading is not sinking in and I needed a way to slow down and really understand AND have a bit of fun. They liked it!

Hey, flowers are great! I'm sure you can also do boxes, circles, arrows, crosses, and stick figures too, right? You got it, girl! Go therefore and start a journal!

  2. Found your page via Kira and Pinterest - I love your method of journaling Scripture. What a great idea! I am so going to try this out with my 8 year old son.

    1. I hope he loves it. I did it this morning with my boys ages 14, 13, and 9. Not one word of complaint!

  3. This is so awesome! My journaling Bible is not nearly as cool as this I think, but it is a similar idea and so I thought it ok to show it here. Maybe it will be useful in combination with your idea ? Brian www.JournalBible.com

  4. I know this post is a few year old, but I would love to know how this went. Pro's/Cons. I think I am going to incorporate this into our Bible reading for Awana Trek reading through the Bible in three years plan.

    1. Hi Tracy! This still continues to be a great way for us to work through our Bibles. We don't do it as regularly as we should, but the boys still enjoy it. I don't really see any con's since it's getting them to listen to the word, process what they're hearing, and doodle something meaningful. I think it would work great with the AWANA curriculum!

  6. Thank you for your blog! I found you through your Cover-draft posts in the Hustle group. I just finished Ephesians and will start your Philippians Study tonight. I also saved this post so I can start doing it with my oldest son soon. My second son will probably really like it, too. He's a very early reader, but could draw the pictures as we read. Thanks for all your ideas and encouragement through your blogging. :) Esther
