Stone Soup for Five: Dork Diaries #4

Dork Diaries #4

Don't tell Dave, but I've been cheating on his plan a bit.  Just a smootch.  But I NEEDED to get strawberries on WEDNESDAY because if I waited till today (payday) they would probably all be gone for the year. (but they're not.. but still...but I had to be SURE, SURE).  So I stole money from my gas money to pay for the berries and now I'm in debt to myself. Again.

Six girl pushups STILL kill me.
By four my arms are shaking and by six I'm ready to collapse.
It's been 3+ weeks!

The last few days I've made a MONUMENTAL effort to be offline MORE
Real people in the flesh and blood now.
And try to save the rest of my brain from morphing into a computer addicted mess.
But,
I'm weak.

So I came up with a solution that helps a bit.
I shut off the computer.
Or at least the screen.
And what's scary?
I've found myself over at the desk shaking the mouse trying to get the computer
to flash back on WAY more than I thought I would.
Having the screen off gives me enough pause to remember that I'm trying to break this crack/computer addiction and then I can "Oh yeah" and walk away and get back to real life.

But it's freaky how many times I'm sucked in to 'just checking email'.

I still hate baking.  But I did it again.
With help from my youngest sous-chef.
Who is done about 3 minutes into it.
I wonder if he has computer brain too?

For five days now my son has wanted to go on a bike ride with me.
But my bike is BURIED in the shed.
Beneath axes, spiders, a roll on the lawn fertilizer spreader, my husband's bike, etc.
And I'm sure it needs to have the tires aired up,
which means pulling out the tire pump too, from wherever it languishes.
And I haven't done it.
Missed opportunities for both exercise and one on one time.
Will make it a point to get it out today.
TODAY!

AND, I've found THE ANSWER to chores for the boys.
Not only that, but chores done RIGHT the first time.
And done cheerfully *well, ALMOST*
AND done by 11 am.
AND showers taken without me reminding.
AND teeth brushed without me reminding!
OH YEAH!!
The answer?
 ?
Being willing to be MEAN MOM (no shouting, yelling, or threats though) for at least one,
up to two or three days.
And be consistent.
And empathetic.

I'll post what worked for us soon.
It's going to be a long post.
And I still have to organize it in my head.
But it's worth it!

Nope, still haven't made that appointment with the doctor.
Haven't even thought of it till right this second.
I'll do it...
Later.

  1. Kari, I love your posts! Always so good.

Here's a confession: I could not remember your name until you commented on my blog and I was totally kicking myself! I searched all over your blog to try and figure it out and I never could find it, until I started this comment and looked up and saw it on your signature. Duh. Hi Kari, my name is Kira, and I will never forget your name again.

I'm totally going to take your advice about turning the computer off. I'm afraid of how many times I'm going to do the exact same thing because I think I'm just as addicted, if not more. This will be good knowing that someone else is suffering through email withdrawals. Seriously, thanks for being real on this.

You're in debt to yourself *snicker* that is so awesome. Been there, done that! We have worked Dave Ramsey's plan several times and have been out of debt several times but we always wind up back in because our emergency fund isn't big enough. We're almost there again, except for our house, and I'm hoping we can stay there!

  2. I just realized we have the exact same name, only with our letters rearranged. It was meant to be, I guess.

  3. LOL Ya the name thing is cool! I haven't been as good on Dave as I should be... sneaking here and there, and not repaying my debt, but it is WAY better than the paycheck to paycheck we were living, so I'm thankful for that!

And here I am, back on the computer, but I did watch a family movie (with no laptop on my lap) and played the family a few rounds of Mexican Train dominoes so I feel I earned a quick sneak! LOL Thanks for the comments! Love it!
