Stone Soup for Five: Mud on the carpet and sudden Spring hailstorms

Mud on the carpet and sudden Spring hailstorms

Not the best school day today at home, and I had to take some time after lunch for some re-centering... which usually involves vacuuming or sweeping, because I'm slightly semi-neurotic.

So I finally got it done, the floors clean, feeling a bit better about life, then THIS happened...

And it happened RIGHT as I was sitting with my iced coffee for a quiet moment of reading in the 1000 gifts book.

My 12 yr old son had come rushing in the house to tell me he was pretty sure that the bird nesting in our cherry tree, that I named Chewie, is a chickadee.  He was so excited, and grabbed the bird guide we have and pointed out all the reasons why he thought that.

Then he excitedly ran outside to listen to Chewie sing, to see if it was the right song for a chikadee.

And I looked at my freshly cleaned carpet...
now streaked with mud...
and then back at my book...

And thought, how can I be thankful for THAT?

Then, a quiet whisper in the back of my thoughts...

Because if you didn't have a 12 yr old son, your carpets would be pristine.

And I'd take a boy excited about birds over clean carpets ANY DAY.

So I'll be thankful for the sudden Spring hailstorm that made the backyard muddy and for excited and dirty 12 year old boys who want to share their discoveries with their mom.  And I'll praise Jesus for this opportunity to raise these muddy, excited, impatient, sometimes thoughtless, beautiful, healthy boys.

7- Naughty Kitty who brings many smiles while getting in trouble

8- Feasting in the morning before anyone else is up.

9- Teens who play with their food and leave pics on my camera

10- Coffee forgotten in the craziness of a homeschool morning, to be enjoyed as iced coffee in the afternoon.

  1. I love your reminder to look for the little gifts. I am awful at flying off the handle about silly little things instead of just cherishing the moments I have with my girls while they are little. Thanks for sharing!!

  2. It is so true...
I would rather have my kids than to have a perfect clean house. I have been there... without the kids... now to always remember that in the midst of the mess.
    good reminder...

  3. I'm dropping by here from Ann's. On Mondays and Fridays I try to get to know my neighbors in the "A Holy Experience" community by peeking in on the bloggers that post immediately before and after me. You posted right after me today so I am here.

This background wallpaper is exactly the pattern of the wallpaper I had in the house I lived in when my sons were 3 years and newborn. Wow, does that ever take me back. Now they are 38 and 35 with children of their own. My muddy prints were made by my dog today. It is finally warm here so we went for a run. He got so hot that he laid in a muddy puddle to cool off. One leg and paw got missed in the cleanup. The carpet took care of that!

God bless you for your presence in my life today,
    Dawn

  4. Beautiful...

    I'm reminded of Proverbs 14:4
Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.
